3rd Annual Equality Day

Equality Day – 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at City Hall, Jersey City, NJ

Jersey City, NJ – April 14, 2024

The vibrant spirit of equality and social justice illuminated Jersey City, City Hall on April 14, 2024, as the community came together to honor the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Hosted by the Ambedkar International Mission (AIM) USA, the event not only paid homage to Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy but also reaffirmed Jersey City’s dedication to equality, as declared by the Jersey City Council in 2022, designating April 14 as Equality Day.

The commemoration was a rich mosaic of cultural performances, impassioned speeches, and heartfelt acknowledgments of individuals and organizations committed to advancing equality and social justice.

Highlights included the Buddha Vandana, an invocation honoring the wisdom of Buddha, and poignant anecdotes from children and teenagers illustrating the impact of Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings.

Distinguished guests, including Jersey City Council President Joyce E. Watterman, the first African American woman in this role, graced the occasion. President Watterman delivered a stirring address, emphasizing the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of individual dedication to the cause. She presented a resolution to the AIM team, officially recognizing April 14 as Equality Day in Jersey City.

Renowned scholar and activist Dr. Suraj Yengde shared insights into the enduring relevance of Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings, while award-winning investigative reporter Phillip Martin shed light on caste issues within the Indian diaspora community and in India, advocating for greater awareness and action. Shivdas Mhasde, a senior social worker and grassroots activist, commended AIM for their tireless efforts towards equality.

AIM honored individuals who have championed the cause of equality, including Phillip Martin, Shivdas Mhasde, and Dr. Suraj Yengde, with the Equality Award.

The success of the event was made possible through the unwavering support and collaboration of Jersey City City Hall, council members, and city personnel, who demonstrated their commitment to equality and inclusivity by hosting the celebration on a Sunday holiday, despite the Jersey City Marathon. This commemoration exemplifies the shared values of equality and social justice that unite Jersey City, New Jersey, and the United States.
